I Dreamt I Was Enamored of an Ass...
It was my understanding there would be no ass-grabbing in this opera.
- me, during second intermission
The opera was fun. A few random thoughts:
It was odd that, given that the opera was entirely in English, I still had to read the supertitles to understand what was going on. Is it some kind of general operatic convention to use unusual pronunciation and diction? Would a German-speaker have similar difficulty following Die Fledermaus his first time? Or is it just that ordinary English is sufficiently unmusical that it has to be twisted to fit the operatic form?
As the first line of this post suggests, the Titania-Bottom love scene was, err..., raunchy. Lots of ass-grabbing, both literal and punny.
I'm told the actor who played Bottom is a "Bush-loving, beer-drinking Southern boy" and that we'd therefore get along famously. It's a shame I couldn't meet him, but after the show I was tired and sore-of-foot, and so retired to the Den for some light blogging and sleep.
